As a novice in driving, identifying the road you’re on is tricky, but you eventually get a hang of it. When you figure out where you’re supposed to be, you floor the accelerator and cruise on the fast lane. Sometimes, the smoothness of the road and the wind flying past your ears make you believe you know what you’re doing and you’ve got this driving thing all figured out – you’ve gained experience. Indeed, you have, but only for a while.
Then you hit a speed ramp on that highway. You’re thinking, “What’s a speed ramp doing on the highway?” but it’s there, and you run into it with all the speed you’re coming with and fly over the ramp. Sometimes, you land well; other times too, unfortunately, your axle breaks or the shock absorbers give way. Depending on what is broken after that speed bump, you get yourself together quickly and continue at top speed. Of course, you’re still on the highway.
However, you don’t see the sharp curves on the highway early and you negotiate unexpected turns. At the speed that you’re cruising, you can be thrown off the road in the sharp curve, putting your life at risk. Sometimes, you hit a clump of grass that breaks your fall; other times, you crash and barely escape with your life.
Where am I going with this? This highway called marriage is uncharted for every couple. No matter how well-equipped you are with prayers and advice for the journey, nothing prepares you adequately for the bumps and sharp curves that you encounter on the road. Remember that every advice is based on the giver’s personal experience and what they’ve made of stories they’ve heard of other people’s experiences. Your own experiences may differ vastly from theirs. Listen to advice, by all means, but do not be hasty to cut and paste into your marriage. What worked for one couple may not work for you at all. Rather, see how the advice can apply in your marriage and apply it accordingly. We’ve all not figured out everything about this highway just yet.
By all means, enjoy the ride while you’re on the road, but remember the speed ramps and sharp curves. Use your seat belt always, but keep your eyes on the road. Cheers to marital bliss.
