Where Did All the Vultures Go?

Close-up of a vulture perched on a branch against a blue sky in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Where did all the vultures go

We used to see them every day

But suddenly they seem to have gone away

I have searched for them high and low

They used to be on every midden heap

And on tall coconut trees

And even on the roofs of the houses we keep

They used to float around in the skies

And you could see them with your very eyes

But now, strangely, they are nowhere to be found

No matter how much you search around

Have we mistaken them for chicken in coops

Most likely they have ended up in chop bar soups

Inside fried rice packs, I hear

Or in your very own stews, I fear

How many of them have ended up in my belly

Can you really tell

I wonder, but I’m not being frivolous or silly

Why can’t they be found

High up in the skies or right here on the ground

Neither on school parks nor in villages and durbar grounds

They are not by the seaside or in any cops

We must find them else it’ll be our loss

So where are these vultures

Where did they go

Surely, we haven’t eaten up the lot

I pray and hope it isn’t so But where did all those precious vultures go?
